ROAD: Trackbound
A downloadable game for Windows
For one format of my Introductory Game-Development Workshops, I created this from the Vehicle Sample in UE5 as a showcase project -- to inspire, in new game developers, a sense of possibility and stoked creativity.
It has also, conveniently enough, become a passion project of my own, as I've realized it is actually an unplanned expression of the joyful times of my youth spent playing the legendary racing games of the late 90's and early 2000's.
As such, it takes liberal inspiration from:
- Need for Speed II SE (1997),
- Need for Speed III Hot Pursuit (1998),
- Need for Speed IV High Stakes (1999),
- Sega GT (2002),
- Midnight Club II (2003),
- Midnight Club III Dub Edition (2005),
- Test Drive 5 (1998), and even
- Moto Racer (1997).
...and plays in a similar, hybridized gameplay structure.
Even used a Vehicle Class tier system, like the old NFS and Midnight Club games.
I made the music myself, and it very much came from and embodies the feeling of playing those games. The vehicle sounds were recorded from my own car's engine.

--- This version of the game was made using only freely available assets, and what is available within Unreal Engine 5.
--- A new version of the game will be ready soon, with more tracks and races, AI racers to compete against, higher-fidelity world-building, and maybe even some time-trial leaderboards.
